Heh, I have a bit of a problem at the moment... we have a home office so we can play whatever music we like out loud, but our graphic designer is not really into metal so for the past six months or so we've been playing a lot of stoner rock, stuff like Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Fu Manchu, lots of old grunge, etc etc. I don't mind, but I really prefer to code to something a bit heavier. We're gradually increasing the heaviness rotation so eventually he'll be a metal fan without even knowing it :)
Doro (*Can't* go wrong with her)
Circle II Circle
Rage of Creation
Virgin Steele
Shaman
Jag Panzer
Gravedigger
Phoenix Down
Chris Caffery (Often NSFW, though)
Iced Earth
That's just in my current playlist. I'll also mix in some Savatage and Blind Guardian with the usual suspects- Megadeth, Judas Priest, Dio, and the like. It really depends on what I'm doing. I listen to different groups when I'm doing routine coding tasks than when I'm stuck on a problem. Or when I've solved a problem, and am implementing the solution.
Although, just to bug a former coworker (he didn't leave because of the music) I also listen to a lot of early 80's. It's great to watch the look on someone's face when you switch from Priest's Judas Rising to You Spin Me Right Round. And then follow it up with Bubba Shot The Jukebox. Sometimes keeping people off balance is half the trick. :)
I first got turned on to Iced Earth when I found "Tribute to the Gods" on iTunes. They do some awesome remakes of songs from some of their earlier influences. (AC/DC, Iron Maiden, etc...) Not some of their heavier stuff, but definitely worth checking out if you haven't.
Devildriver

Dimmu Borgir
Die Apokalyptischen Reiter

Eisbrecher
Tenacious D
Black Bomb A
The Project Hate

But I'm not listening to metal all the time, sometimes I just need some really dark music, so I switch to Dark Ambient / Death Industrial, mostly bands from label Cold Meat Industry: Raison D'être, Coph Nia, Ordo Rosarius Equilibrio, Atrium Carceri, Sophia, ....
Or some nice Soundtracks: Planet Terror, 300, Memories of a Geisha, ...
I just added the iLike gadget to my profile, and then embedded a couple of my Finetune playlists. Will probably get around to uploading some of the music that I have that I usually can't find in online services.
I find I can't listen to a lot of metal while coding anymore. It tends to distract me from concentrating lately, could just be the onset of ADD I suppose :)
God, this thread makes me sad that I have been putting off restoring my backed up music that I lost in a hard drive crash. So many bands that I've kind of forgotten about, and now so many to check out.
To add a few that I've been really into lately:
As I Lay Dying
Bloodsimple
God Forbid
Devil Driver
Dog Fashion Disco -- Circus Metal! (How can you go wrong with "Pour Some Urine On Me" ? Their first album is amazing)
Dragonforce -- of course
Evergreen Terrace (hardcore punk)
The Fall of Troy (post hardcore punk? not really sure how to classify them)
Killswitch Engage
Lamb of God
Living Sacrifice (really only their first album, not a fan of their recent stuff - must be the new singer)
Mudvayne
Mushroomhead
Nevermore
Nonpoint
Norma Jean
Nothingface
Scars of Tomorrow
Thrice (all over the place from hardcore, punk, speed... love these guys)
I'll have to check out a few of these other bands. I've been itching for some new music, but I've had difficulty finding anything that I like.
My favorites:
Pantera
Static-X
Mudvayne
Disturbed
Slipknot
Sevendust (mainly their first 2 albums...they've fallen off the wagon a bit with their newer stuff)
Korn
The Prodigy
Bosstones
My tastes are all over the place. I like the heavy stuff most of the time (mostly when driving and coding, but not at the same time :)), but definitely like to cool down with some bouncy/lighter stuff.
