By far, mine was Evergrey at Prog Power 2006. They recreated their live album for the PP audience, complete with string quartet, and live back vocalists. It was amazing.
I find it so hard to pick a "best" because they are all memorable for some reason. Seeing Danzig was a HUGE deal for me cos I'm such a massive fan and I didn't think he'd ever come back to Australia... and Megadeth last week was pretty huge too because I've been waiting so long.
But my favourite live band by far is Fear Factory - I've seen them at least four times now, they really like it here in Perth so they always make the trip. They even made the video for Cyberwaste here, in an abandoned power station. I was at the shoot with some mates of mine, and if you go frame by frame I SWEAR you can see my hand in the crowd at one point. No, really, you CAN :)
saw sepultura in glasgow in 1994...absolutely TREMENDOUS...also saw pantera there the year before(i think!)....don't think i've ever paid so much to be as injured as that....there's nothing to compare with wandering out of a pantera gig bruised and battered onto the cold streets of glasgow hahaha.....happy times!
- early 90s was owned by White Zombie imho. They had some of the best stage shows you could find back then.
- currently I would have to go with The Flaming Lips. Just search youtube, I don't think I could ever explain it if you are not familar already haha.
- musically Prong and The Urge were amazing live shows I remember. The vocals were spot on and the playing and sound were great. The Urge had some trombone players and horns and heavy guitars and the guy singing was amazing in a live setting. Many times you see some really weak vocals in a live setting, but that guy brought the guns that night.
Certainly doesn't qualify as metal, but by far the best live performance I've seen was David Gilmore at the Tweeter Center in NJ performing Dark Side Of The Moon in its entirety. Even better than the studio.
Not metal but by far the best live performance I've EVER seen was Jeff Beck at HOB in Myrtle Beach. I was about 10 feet from him and it was mind blowing...
Yeah, Jeff Beck would be hard to beat for a live performance. Never got to see him live, although have seen many videos. His drummer from his heyday, Simon Phillips, is the drummer for Toto now.
It would be a toss-up between Blue Oyster Cult at the Las Vegas Convention center in 1974, and Black Sabbath at the same venue in 1976. Ozzy was still with them then.
I would take Blue Oyster Cult for the stage show, as they were one of the first bands to travel with a laser light show and all the fog, and it just blew everybody away.
Black Sabbath still had Ozzy with them in 1976. They were actually the opening act for Peter Frampton, if you can believe it, who was the biggest act in the world that year.
Best live performance ever would have to be Toto in Las Vegas in 1999. Not a heavy metal band (obviously) but they can really rock and play progressive fusion as well. Phenomenal musicians on par with bands like Dream Theater.
Pantera in Gent, Belgium, in the early 90's. A 1000 people crowd, completely packed, an amazing show and pit. Sadly one dead guy who jumped from a balcony to stage dive.
