ColdFusion Community

The online Coldfusion community website

Bob

Is ColdFusion suitable for building a social networking site?

I'm a total CF noob and joined CFcommunity just so I could post this question to a bunch of CF veterans. I'm about to embark on a journey to create a social-networking site and am hunting for the best set of tools to do it with. Thought I'd seek the benefit of collective wisdom before I start down the road of learning via hard-knocks.

Honestly Jeff... I could rebuild this portal in Coldfusion in about 2 weeks using Coldfusion solo and it would be even better :P However I haven't seen the admin interface so not sure how much functionality lives behind that.

Hey Ben, thats a rather bold statement and one i would love to see achieved. You to weeks start now ;)

I agree that CF would indeed make it a rapid way to develop such an app but lets not underestimate the great work that ning have done here. There is a lot that you can do with this app as you can access the top level code base.

That said I would be keen to develop a social CF App if you want to start one :)

Yes!

We have more than 20 sites in CF.

Hi Bob,
The open source ColdBricks project was just released, which is a CMS/Portal creation platform written in Coldfusion. From it's homepage: "ColdBricks have been used to create sites like personal start pages, news agregators, social networking communities..."
It looks promising and might be worth looking into for your endeavor:

Hi, Bob
I entered this network less than one hour ago, googling 'coldfusion social network', which brought me your title question!! in second place!!.
I start to search after trying to understand and get examples from ning and ning developers site about how to use their xns database like system. When I almost gave up, I start to search for something like ning (this site), but with cf database capabilities. In the sponsored links there is a $ 500 software, that claims to do the job, but who knows...
After reading repplies, I think more than one is looking for something in this direction: not to reinvent 'la polvora', and only concentrate in the features we want to add to the site.
Now that I found that this CF communitiy is relying over a ning site, I don't know if to be sad (did not see any solution yet -well in this half an hour - or happy, because CF is powerful and something it is going to appear.
Pleased to meet you Bob, and everybody in this thread.

For another example of a social networking site built on CF, check out BiteClub, which was built using Sava, an open source Coldfusion CMS.
