I've been meaning to ask you Nick, without compromising security, is ning hosting this site or were you able to set this app up on your own host? Can you make this a secure site? The reason I ask is I started to learn CF to create a site and social network for my users. Once I got into it, I realized the complexity of a social network, even one with limited modules.

I'm watching Colin's effort on RiaForge, but we all know development is time consuming. I remembered the announcement of this site and came looking. I'm considering other applications, but I still want to work in CF, since I'll have a shot at understanding the code. I saw your "challenge" to Ben in the other thraed. Too bad there isn't a wiki attached to this site where a challenge/collboration could take place.

No matter what, thanks for this site, I'm learning a lot!

Hi Matt, the platform is on ning servers but you can get access to the top level code so you can change quite a bit of it around - check out http://artreview.com. I would love to build this in CF but i've not got enough time for my other projects let alone another one :s

While the Ning platform may not be CF-related, it is very useful for setting up vertical social networks fairly quickly. I really enjoy developing in Cold Fusion myself, but when I set up http://www.mohawksrock.com Ning was great. It gave me a ton of tools, and other people developing on it constantly to get the site up and running with maybe like 10 hours or less of total initial time.

Down the road, maybe one could convert it into CF, but I'll probably just build off subdomains for anything super custom. At the same time Ning is using the Open Social API, so lots of tools and synergies will be available out there from lots of developers in different languages. Just because its back-end isn't CF doesn't mean its not a great solution to "some" problems. It has community and re-use very much in mind especially with the OpenSocial platform being utilized as well.

i could agree more - we have the following sub apps plugged in:

http://artreview.com/artNewsAlert
http://artreview.com/artfinder

and more are coming ;)

Cool, just as a heads up your bare domain artreview.com is not working, but the www.artreview.com is working. I'll be checking these out soon

Are you sure? I've just tried on 3 machines and it's working ok?

Tried again at home off of my work network, and still the bare domain links do not work, but the www subdomained links do work. Wonder if its some crazy US vs. UK DNS configuration.

do you know if a custom forum can be plugged in? my site is www.frisco-online.com. We have news articles but want to convert it to looking more like an msnbc.com kind of layout. We have restaurant reviews. We use fusetalk for our forums and I do not think my users would like the forums in ning as we get too many postings. Can a forum like fusetalk be integrated with ning to pick up the other functions?

Reply to This

yup - that should be no problem - but remember it has forums already built into it - saying that it's easy to remove the link.

could the users in the forum be integrated into the ning site with a single sign-on? Meaning the profile page built by ning would show up instead of the fusetalk profile page and users could post in the forums or create groups with a single sign-on?

I saw someone has to be a member of ning. Does that meet I would have to import all of my users into ning for it to work?

Hi Jeff, you would need to invite all members to be in your ning network. TO be honest - i would be tempted to move them all over onto the ning platform as it appears to do everything you need. Then just use your fusetalk as an archive.
